Meaning of Kalinowski

Go to Previous Topic Go to Next Topic

Kalinowski is a name of Polish origin and most likely means "person from Kalinow, Kalinowa, Kalinowo, etc." However, because there are so many villages with such names in Poland, it is difficult to specify from which one a certain Kalinowski hails. The name of the place comes from kalina, which means guelder rose or cranberry tree (Viburnum opulus). There is also a female first name, Kalina. Therefore it can be safely concluded that those villages were either near a place with lots of guelder roses or cranberry trees, or possibly a place that was once owned or founded by a Kalina.

Kalinowa Coat of Arms

Go to Previous Topic Go to Next Topic

Historical sources mention that in medieval times, the Kalinowski family was granted Coat of Arms. This section is dedicated to the Kalinowa Coat of Arms, which is described as follows:

Arms: On a red shield, an upright silver arrow with a golden point, which is upward. The plumage (the flights) is split into a V shape. At each end of the plumage, the arrow is decorated with a golden six-pointed star. Helmet decoration: Rising from a golden nobleman coronet, three white ostrich feathers through which the same arrow as on the shield passes through horizontally from the left to the right. The arrow is decorated with the same golden, six-pointed stars at each end of the plumage.

Below is a picture of the shield of the Kalinowski family Coat of Arms, followed by my translation of the above description into "heraldic language."

Helmet decoration: Rising from a nobleman coronet Or, a plume of three ostrich feathers argent transpierced fesswise by the same arrow, its point dexter, decorated with the same mullets.
